An ATS-friendly resume is more than a document with the right keywords. It must be readable by applicant tracking systems and communicate your experience clearly to hiring teams. This free checklist helps you review your resume step by step before you submit an application.

What is an ATS-friendly resume?

An ATS-friendly resume presents contact details, experience, education and skills in a clear structure. It uses relevant language from the target job description naturally and avoids complex visual elements that may reduce readability. Every applicant tracking system works differently, so no template can guarantee ranking or an interview. A clear structure, accurate keywords and evidence-based achievements still create a strong foundation.

What does the checklist cover?

- Resume structure and readability

- Keyword alignment with the target job description

- Result-focused experience bullets

- File format and technical checks

- A final 10-minute review before submission

How should you use keywords?

Identify recurring role titles, tools, methods, technical skills and industry terms in the job description. Add the skills you genuinely have to your professional summary, experience and skills sections in a natural way. Avoid keyword stuffing. Instead, connect relevant terms to specific examples of work you have completed. Every statement on your resume should be accurate and easy to explain in an interview.

How can you strengthen experience bullets?

Move beyond listing responsibilities. Use an action, scope and result structure: explain what you did, the tool or method you used and what changed because of your contribution. When possible, add defensible numbers related to time, volume, quality, cost, revenue or stakeholder impact. Clear outcomes help both recruiters and hiring managers understand the value behind your work.

What should you check in formatting?

Use standard section headings, selectable text and a simple reading flow. Do not place critical information only inside images, graphics, text boxes, headers or footers. If the job application requests a specific file type, follow that instruction first. After exporting your resume, reopen the file and check characters, line breaks, links and page order.
